The Russian government is sending one of the world's largest warships into the Caribbean for a joint naval exercise with Venezuela. This will mark the first time since the end of the Cold War in December 1991 that a Russian naval force will sail that "American sea." The ships will operate in the Caribbean during November, showing support for Venezuela's government, which is strongly anti-United States.
Leading the Russian force will be the Petr Velikiy, a 26,000-ton, nuclear-propelled "battle cruiser." The ship, completed in 1998, is the world's largest warship other than aircraft carriers, and displaces more than twice as much as the largest U.S. surface combatants, the Aegis missile cruisers of the Ticonderoga (CG 47) class.
While Russian officials have denied that the deployment is linked to the United States sending naval ships into the Black Sea to visit a Georgian port, the Petr Velikiy cruise certainly reflects Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's efforts to demonstrate that Russia is again a major political-military "player" on the world scene. The single Russian aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, led a task force into the Mediterranean in late 2007, and there have been periodic long-range flights by Russian Bear bombers as the Putin regime seeks to impress other nations that Russia is still a great power. Admiral Eduard Baltin, former commander of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, said that the Caribbean maneuvers mean that "Russia is returning to the stage in its power and international relations which it, regrettably, lost at the end of last century".
"No one loves the weak," Baltin was quoted as saying by Russia's Interfax news agency.
Baltin, in January 2007, had declared that there was a buildup of U.S. nuclear-propelled submarines in the Persian Gulf area for the purpose of a Tomahawk missile strike against Iran.
"The presence of U.S. nuclear submarines in the Persian Gulf region means that the Pentagon has not abandoned plans for surprise strikes against nuclear targets in Iran. With this aim a group of multi-purpose submarines ready to accomplish the task is located in the area," he said.
There has been intense Russian interest in the Caribbean area since 1959, when Fidel Castro took control of Cuba and began negotiations with the Soviet Union for economic and military assistance. As the Soviets built up an arsenal of defensive and offensive weapons in Cuba in 1962, there were plans to dispatch cruisers and destroyers as well as submarines to the area to be based in Cuban ports. In the event, at the time of the crisis only a few Soviet diesel-electric submarines were in the area. Following the crisis additional conventional submarines visited the island's ports, with the first nuclear submarine arriving in 1969. Almost simultaneously a missile cruiser and two other surface combatants visited Cuba. Additional Soviet warships made periodic deployments into the Caribbean, including the helicopter carrier-missile cruiser Leningrad in 1984.
At the same time as these ship visit to Cuba, naval Bear reconnaissance/targeting aircraft made periodic flights from their Northern fleet bases, down the Atlantic, and landed in Cuba for short-term operations. They subsequently returned to their Soviet bases.
Such flights and warship visits came to an end with the demise of the Soviet Union.
The relatively modern destroyer Admiral Chabanenko (completed in 1999), probably another surface combatant, and an oiler will accompany the Petr Velikiy to the Caribbean. The nuclear-propelled warship is one of two remaining ships of a class of four "battle cruisers" at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg. The two other ships are no longer operational. These giant cruisers have combination oil-burning and nuclear propulsion plants that can drive them at 32 knots. They are armed with a massive array of anti-ship, anti-submarine, and air/missile defense weapons.

Please CIA, will you do the world a favor and remove Chavez once and for all?
Please be serious about it (not like Fidel Castro's failed attempts).
And you don't need to be creative about the removing/killing method, anything that works will do

There are no such things as Russian Battleships, it is just Russian hype and counter advertising..
MOSCOW (AP) — Three hours after saying one of Russia's most powerful ships was in disrepair and could "explode" at any moment, navy chief Adm. Vladimir Kuroyedov on Tuesday retracted the comment, saying the nuclear-powered Peter the Great missile cruiser was safe and in no danger.
The nuclear-powered Peter the Great missile cruiser is seen in this 1996 file picture.
By Serge Ligtenberg, AP
Kuroyedov said Russian news agencies misunderstood his initial statement, but others attributed the flap to infighting among navy brass.
Kuroyedov's suggestion that the Peter the Great was unfit for service could have stemmed from his personal feud with the uncle of the ship's captain, or from his role in the sinking of a decommissioned nuclear submarine last year — a disaster that deeply embarrassed the navy, the business newspaper Kommersant said.
Kuroyedov gave his comments to Interfax and ITAR-Tass news agencies in a smoking room on his way to a meeting of top military officials.
First, he said the massive cruiser had been badly maintained.
"Everything is all right on the ship where admirals walk, but in the areas where they don't, everything is in such condition that it may blow up at any moment," Kuroyedov was quoted as saying.
"It's especially dangerous because it has a nuclear reactor," he added, giving no details on the ship's condition but suggesting the reactor was the problem.
Then, he said he had ordered the captain to fix flaws in the ship's maintenance within two weeks — a length of time that seemed to contradict the urgency of initial, alarmist statement.
Three hours later, he took it all back.
"There is no threat whatsoever to the ship's nuclear safety," he said in a statement. "The ship's nuclear safety is fully guaranteed in line with existing norms."
Some flaws in maintaining the cruiser's living quarters would be fixed within three weeks, he said, after which the ship would become fully combat-ready.
In its report, Kommersant noted that Kuroyedov's has a personal conflict with Retired Adm. Igor Kasatonov, uncle of the cruiser's captain, Rear Adm. Vladimir Kasatonov.
It also said Kuroyedov could have aimed his jab at the Northern Fleet's ex-chief, Adm. Gennady Suchkov, who was relieved of his duties temporarily pending investigations into the sinking of the decommissioned nuclear submarine in August.
Kuroyedov had tried to shift blame for the disaster to Suchkov, but Kasatonov had testified in court that the navy chief bore the main responsibility. Nine of 10 crewmen aboard the K-159 sub died when it sank in a howling storm on its way to a scrapyard.
Russian media also have criticized Kuroyedov over his role in the sinking of the Kursk nuclear submarine in 2000 and his failure to improve the navy's degrading condition. Many expected President Vladimir Putin to fire Kuroyedov, but he has managed to cling to the job.
In the latest blow to Russian military prestige, the navy failed to perform missile launches from nuclear submarines during last month's ambitious maneuvers — personally overseen by Putin.
Kuroyedov, who watched the maneuvers from the Peter the Great, claimed that the first of two scheduled launches had never been planned despite numerous announcements to the contrary. The statement was widely ridiculed by Russian media.
On Tuesday, he said the second failed launch of a RSM-54 missile was due to its age.
"The missile was manufactured in 1987 and had a designated lifetime of 7 1/2 years," Kuroyedov said, adding that the navy now considers its RSM-54 missiles only 95% reliable.
The post-Soviet funding squeeze has badly hurt the navy, prompting it to mothball a large number of ships and keep most others docked for years because of shortages of fuel and spare parts.

well i read one of the post and it triggered a good move for our military forces, thanks be to god.. instead of moth balling our our old but good shaped ships.. make another fleet .maybe not as good as what we have in the oceans but none the less an American Presence in an ever changing world. put them in the gulf of mexico and carrabian sea and to patrol our homeland waters..
no need to junk a good ship that can still be used..

welp when you play wussy for over a decade taking hit after hit and just slapping hands what do you expect? this Nation has had its hands slapped while doing a worth while deed and we have always backed down. we need someone like regan back in office with some power n guts to put these countries in their place. crap look at russia acting like it a world power to deal with, well make no mistake it is but then again. if we recruited everyone in the state of texas alone we could out gun, out number, and beat their communist asses back to russia. the old soviet union is gone..our forces at one time were stronger but since the carter and clinton closeing our bases and letting our troops slowly dwindle down to low numbers and if we set back and let the russians actions intimidate us then we are the wussies..i say its time we make a stand and once n for all show the world that we are the superpower and to leave us alone or pay the consiquiences. get back our wordly regognition. i served my time in vietnam , we stood like dumb jackasses and waited to get shot at before we could shoot back.. and if we shot someone we better be ready to prove they shot first. i remember the days when i came home to an ungrateful nation and they still are for the most part . America wake up. buy all the guns and rifles you can ,,because the day is coming when we will probably have to fight right here on us soil...because most of the liberal jackasses wont make a stern stand against our enemies and believe it or not.. this country has many nations who would love nothing more than to see us crawling in the grass looking for food.. we give millions , maybe even billions to all those countries who hate us including all the russians, and islamic nations. crap we pay billions to the arabs and then pay top dollar for their oil..we are there lets take our war debt in oil. what are we afraid of? russia? syria, jordan iraq,? i'd guess the free world is afraid of Iran... lets not forget, they are persians who became islamic
extremist and when their leader was here , you know why he was always smiling? because he had no fear of the US Military forces.. i best stop or one of the liberals might try to slit my throat while i sleep. if he can get past my bull dogs.

Russia might just be able to take us in a battle, because we can't pronounce the names of there ships and would spend half the battle who we'd be targeting

Don't forget that Venezuela has signed a deal "to buy five Project 636 diesel submarines, and four Project 637 Amur submarines at a later date". And the current surface package is likely to have an few sub-surface escorts. It would be interesting if one of the 4 surface ships being sent, was a sub-tender.
They could be delivering the Venezuelan submarines. Or Conducting advanced training & coordination exercises for Venezuelan crews on Russian subs. The Battle cruiser & it's destroyer will probably simulate an American Carrier Battle Group, along with the 2 ASW bombers simulating B-52s... But that's just a guess. :\

Show boat from Russia, maybe we should send a missle crusier into the Black Sea instead of a command ship. Tit-for-Tat and the beat goes on. One thing for sure I am sure the Democrats will want to fund a new social program to fight this re-emerging military challenge. Perhaps a sensativity program for our military.

(CNN) -- Two Russian bombers have landed at a Venezuelan airfield, from which they will carry out training flights for several days, the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
Russia's Tupolev TU-160, pictured here in 2003, is a long-range strategic bomber.
The Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bombers landed at Venezuela's Libertador military airfield and "will spend several days carrying out training flights over neutral waters, after which they will return to the base," Interfax reported, citing the Russian Defense Ministry.
Col. Alexander Drobyshevsky, a ministry spokesman, told Interfax that NATO fighters followed the bombers on their 13-hour flight over the Arctic Ocean and the Atlantic.
"All flights by air force aircraft have been and are marked by strict conformity to the international rules on the use of air space over neutral waters," Drobyshevsky told Interfax.
The U.S. will monitor the Russian training, said Pentagon officials who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak on the information.
On Monday, Russia announced it might hold joint naval maneuvers with Venezuela in the Caribbean. The declaration came in the wake of increased tension between Russia and the United States over Russia's invasion last month of the former Soviet republic of Georgia, a U.S. ally that aspires to join NATO.
Russia on Monday denied any link between that announcement and the conflict in Georgia, although Russia has criticized U.S. support for Georgia, and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has long antagonized Washington.
Russian ships to visit Venezuela; naval exercises possible
Russia agrees to Georgia withdrawal deadline
Earlier this month, Chavez said Venezuela would welcome the Russian air force, according to Russian news agency Novosti.
"If Russian long-range bombers should need to land in Venezuela, we would not object to that either. We will also welcome them," Chavez said on September 1, according to Novosti.

I think instead of mothballing or sending our older Forestal class carriers to the scrap yards, we ought to keep them along with all those F14 Tomcats & start another fleet called the "Home Waters Fleet" & keep half the carriers in the Gulf of Mexico & the other half in the Pacific supported by a battleship(s) & older but useful cruisers & destroyers & subs to patrol these waters.
It would certainly nullify any naval buildup by Hugo & cohorts plus with the help of the USCG medium & high endurance cutters they should be able to shut down the drug trafficers too.
At the minimum we should be able to nip Hugo's Ego in the bud & keep drug smuggling way down.
As for Putin's folly on the high seas, he's probably going to lose what ever ship that can still make the trip here but will not have a home port in the Black Sea to go back so they will have to go back to Murmansk or worse yet Vladavlisok in the north pacific. I am sure they can make it (we might have to toe them).

What I find interesting is the grouping of ships and aircraft the russians have coming down for this. They are bringing a capital ship that was designed to be an Anti-submarine platform, and yes it has S-300s on the back of it plus some anti-ship missiles. They also bring a Udaloy class destroyer with them that again was designed primarily for Anti-submarine warfare. They also fly down 2 TU-160s. They didn't fly down a single TU-95 Bear yet. The Blackjacks don't normally fly down with the shipsd, its usually the Bears for Maritime Recon roles. So are they trying to test their Anti-Air and Anti-Submarine Capabilities with this exercise with Venezuela? Also does anyone know what the Venezuelans will be using in this exercise? I would say to watch for their Kilo class submarines to deploy for this one.
As for being an F-18 pilot coming toward an S-300? I bet an E/A-18 Growler would have an answer for the S-300.

"Hmmm Single capital ship, no escorts"
Ummm.....no?
"*Leading* the Russian force will be the Petr Velikiy, a 26,000-ton, nuclear-propelled "battle cruiser."
At least one destroyer is listed as being in the group (still I admit hardly a wartime escort). It's hard to imagine why anyone would send a nuclear-powered surface combatant out alone ever, simply because of all the problems that aren't fatal if there are two hulls in the area rather than one...
And stop planning how to sink it, anyway. They've got few enought left that are seaworthy - don't be mean.

You really couldn't have picked a worse example if you tried could you, lets see, Isreal is a prosperous and wealthy country, Palestine a complete sht hole. Isreal would have wiped those savages out a long time ago if it wern't for 'international' condemnation everytime a palestinian or ten is killed through thier own stupidity which is in turn a product of their own stupid mentality that the Jews are evil and must die etc etc. Oh btw your heroic (in your eyes not mine) suicide bombers are a failure, less and less of them get through and when they do thier ttacks do nothing but harden resolve to wipe out the savages, the suicide attacks have no bearing on Israels military or its power, they simple serve as pathetic jestures of a desparate bunch of savages intent on killing as many innocent civilians as possible.

No, in a global thermo nuclear war with the Russians missile defense makes not a speck of difference for obvious reasons of the amount of ICBMs involved and thier flight paths over the poles (not anywhere near the proposed sites in eastern Europe and the site in Alaska would be over whelmed within seconds. Russian bombers in Cuba or Venezuala during a nuclear conflict would be utterly pointless, there simply is no need for them when they the Russians have thousands of ICBMs that get to America faster and do more damage.
All the bombers would become is easy targets for tomahawks, ICBMs etc. Far better the Russians kept them back in Russia where if things did kick off they have at least a small chance of getting them off the ground before the warheads start raining down on thier airbases. This stunt with the bombers really is nothing more then that - a stunt for publcity and propaganda for thier people and thier allies (lol).

I think what has to be realized, is the more people poke countries like Iran, Russia and Venezuela the more they will push back. Sure they might be no real threat in terms of superiority but a collaboration on many fronts, coupled with more allies in other regions such as Korea (maybe even China) will make it impossible for the US to a act to save everyone. Heck the best thing any army can do is roll over invite the invasion in and then wage a drawn out low tech guerrilla campaign similar to Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
You only have to look at the US success in Iraq and the NATO failings in Afghanistan and now the instability generated in Pakistan.
If you think these countries are weak then look at the might of Israel over Palestine, has Palestine given up? No they continue to find support and continue to fight. They have little more then bombs on bodies, a desperate but effective message.

Yes the US has better ships, but the US had a better Navy than that availble to the Sunni insurgency too. Took a while to get a handle on that, didn't it?
The Moskva class ships have S300's on the back, and so they can still make a pain in the arse of themselves, I wouldn't want to be in an F-18 if one of those came at me.

Two Tu-160 bombers just landed in Venezuela for exercises. Whoever has hypersonic missiles wins. I congratulate you on your overconfidence. You dudes of course are tall buffed, not fat and pimpled teens I suppose. I will be in Cuba for my January vacation, no fat Americans.
You Americans are ruled by moneychangers. Just look at the faces of dudes who testified in congress today on defense, walk around in Manhattan and look at who rules you and sells you genetically modified food that makes you fat, while they themselves shop at Whole Foods stores.

It would seem way to easy to blow this thing out of the water.. God I love America.

In response, US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack poked fun at Russia's navy. He said that if Russia really intends to send ships to the Caribbean, "then they found a few ships that can make it that far."

It was sailing in the middle of the Medetarainian Sea not the Atlantic Ocean or Pacific Ocean. I realise you probably a butthurt Soviet, sorry Russian fanboy but those big systems on the Bear should have been able to locate their carrier group but failed miserably, face it they sucked.

The Russia's military was a bustard child for a last twenty years since Perestroyka started.
Therefore, Russian military equipment is not in the best of shapes nowadays. Their military personnel is grossly underpaid, so it's not surprising that that their equipment is poorly maintained and failing.
However, I really wouldn't want that piece of junk to sink in our or near-by waters since it's nuclear powered.

"hey, wonder if it will be as amusing as thier last years exercise, the one where it took the bear aircraft twelve hours to locate thier own carrier group, in the med and if i rememeber rightly there were ships breaking down then"
Do you know how difficult it is to actually locate a ship in the ocean. Let alone a military ship. Oceans are BIG.
Without satellite targeting, any navy in the worls would take several hours to find it, even one as large as a carrier.

FTA: "No one loves the weak," Baltin was quoted as saying by Russia's Interfax news agency.
Baltin, in January 2007, had declared that there was a buildup of U.S. nuclear-propelled submarines in the Persian Gulf area for the purpose of a Tomahawk missile strike against Iran.
Yep he was dead right there about Iran wasn't he...

Wait and watch for that outdated heap of junk to break down, was it not the admiral of one of those types of battlecrusier who said some years ago its lucky it never blew up it was so crappy, lol.
Ah yes here we are after a minute of googling:
Mar. 24--MOSCOW -- In yet another blow to Russia's beleaguered military, the navy's commanding admiral ordered a nuclear-powered battle cruiser to return to port Tuesday for fear that "it could explode at any moment."
Adm. Vladimir Kuroyedov said the Peter the Great, the flagship of the Northern Fleet, had become unseaworthy and dangerous. During a recent inspection he found the cruiser to be poorly maintained, including "the contents of the (on-board) nuclear reactor."

I would not be surprised to hear Chavez announce the creation of a permanent Russian naval base in Venezuela. It would go nicely with the re-opening of the old Soviet's Syrian port of Tartus. Not to mention Chavez is probably looking for a little "muscle" to help him "change" the Venezuelan Constitution, and remain El Presidente for life.

South America is going to become a growing player in future world events... with Brazil finding large oil fields & socialism running rampant in a few countries. I wonder if we'll soon see a new round of Proxy Wars & insurrections? After all, in about 10-20 years, the Earth will have about 5 or 6 Major/Super powers.
Watching hurricane Ike ravage Cuba... this might have been a good time for the US to send a hospital ship, like the USNS Comfort, for a port call or a Caribbean cruise.
Maybe NATO should become part of a larger defense & space organization. From South Korea to Turkey. Call it The League of Democratic Countries, or how about the United Federation of Free Nations (LOL!). ;)
Trivia: What South American country is a member of NATO?

Too bad we don't have a battleship to field against their battlecruiser...

I see that this "posture" move by the Putin gang is trying to show their flag/wave a small stick at the US Navy & US in general.
If it means anymore than bravado at a time when the Putin gang is possibly going to lose their naval base at Sevastapol, I can't see its worth while wasting all that time on Hugo's ego.
Russia would be better off keeping their fleet close at hand rather than a cruise half way around the world where they'd only lose those ships in any event for if nothing else but a lack of re-supply/fuel/ support in crisis as in 1962.
I think if Putin is trying to scare his former slave states back into submission he's sorely mistaken. In fact it might just have the opposite
effect. The Ukraine might just boot the Russian fleet out of the Crimea altogether. That would in fact cause the Putin gang to invade the Ukraine thus fight himself so to speak. Not only would this set back Russia's ability to utilize a warm water port that they've always needed, but would also show the western allies their true ambitions.
Maybe the new Russian president better show some nerve and put Putin on ice before things really get out of control.Especially if he has his sights set on Poland/Chech republic or the Baltic states.
Russia need to go foward with its thinking & not regress to Stalin tactics of yesteryear.
